Tides of Brisbane: Historic Boat Tour

Splash into summer with the return of our refreshed Tides of Brisbane: Historic Boat Tour.

Hop on a historical boat ride around the riverbend that dives deep into the history of Brisbane and the moments that have helped shape our city. Join us as we charter through studied stories of Brisbane’s winding development, including:

  • First Nations lives and experiences around the river
  • Early colonial impressions on the area, convict history and early migration stories
  • Contemporary and historical buildings of significance that played a part in the urban development of our city
  • The Story Bridge as a major crossing point and economic boost for Brisbane during difficult times

As well as soaking up the many fascinating stories from Museum of Brisbane’s professional tour guides, guests will experience unforgettable views of Brisbane from the river.

Starting from the lush oasis of the City Botanic Gardens pontoon, join us as we meander past convict-built structures, historic landmarks and incredible feats of engineering. Make the most of our city’s sensational weather and bask in the river breeze on this 2-hour tour like no other!

River to Bay is locally owned and operated. They have a capable team of skippers and deckhands that ensure whatever adventure they take you on is safe and enjoyable.

Museum of Brisbane is excited to charter the boats through River to Bay to deliver this fascinating tour to the people of Brisbane.

FAQs

Where does the boat tour depart from?

Please meet at the City Botanic Gardens River Hub on Edward Street. To ensure a timely departure, please give yourself plenty of time to park and walk to meet your tour guide.

HOW TO GET THERE

How long does the boat tour go for?

Dependent on the weather and group size, the tours run for approximately 2 hours.

Can the weather impact the boat tour?

Tours will go ahead unless you are informed of a cancellation. If there is a severe weather warning, we will notify participants of cancellation and organise an alternative date. If showers or extreme heat are predicted, the tour guide may modify the route and the length of the tour.

What do I need to bring?

Bring a small backpack or the like as storage space is minimal. You’ll need comfortable, casual clothes and sensible footwear is strongly recommended. We also recommend you bring a hat and sunscreen.

What time should I arrive?

In order to keep to our schedule, we ask that you arrive at the pontoon at least 15 minutes before the scheduled pick up time.  If we arrive early, we’ll start boarding immediately.

Are there toilet facilities on the boat?

Yes, the boats are equipped with a private toilet. However, more spacious bathrooms and PWD facilities will be available at the pit stop at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Do you cater for accessibility needs?

To access the City Botanic Gardens River Hub, there is a ramp and set of stairs. The boat is not currently wheelchair accessible. The boat will stop at the Brisbane Powerhouse river hub and guests will walk disembark on the jetty. From the jetty there is a 50m walk to Mary Maes café and the lower ground bathrooms of Brisbane Powerhouse. Do you serve food or beverages?

The tour includes a stop at a local restaurant where coffee and light refreshments are available for purchase. Bottled water will be provided on the boat.
