Walking in Wartime

Step back in time to explore Brisbane in the Second World War.

Be transported to the age of jazz music, Yankee soldiers and the infamous Battle of Brisbane in Walking in Wartime, an engaging tour that will lead you around the city and into the past.

Starting in the Museum of Brisbane’s City Hall location, uncover the important role the building played during the Second World War, before heading off to uncover locations in our city that reveal compelling stories of wartime experience. Stop at the picturesque Albert Street Uniting Church to hear about Brisbane’s war brides, learn of the tensions between Australian and US troops which caused the infamous ‘Battle of Brisbane’ and uncover the secret stories of the code breakers who helped win the war. Finish your tour in front of the MacArthur Museum, the former headquarters of General MacArthur.

How do I make a booking online?

Click the Book Now button and select the number of participants and your dates in the calendar. An eTicket and your booking details will then be sent to your email address.

Please note, Walking in Wartime is a by demand tour and has a capacity of 12 visitors.

How do I know that my booking has been confirmed if I book online?

An eTicket and your booking details will be sent to your email address. If your email confirmation does not appear please check your junk mail folder. If you have to change your booking or the email confirmation does not arrive, please call Museum of Brisbane reception on (07) 3339 0800 or email bookings@museumofbrisbane.com.au.

Are the walking tours wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the Walking in Wartime walking tour is wheelchair accessible. Please note, the route can be modified to make it easier and more accessible.

Where do we meet on the day of our tour?

Meet at the Museum of Brisbane reception desk on Level 3 of City Hall. We recommend you arrive 10 minutes prior to the beginning of the tour.

How long do the tours go for?

Dependent on the weather and group size, the walking tours run for approximately 90minutes to two hours.

What do I need to bring on a walking tour?

Please bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, earphones, sunscreen, water, and a light snack. We recommend an umbrella in case of rain.

Can the weather impact walking tours?

Tours will go ahead unless you are informed of a cancellation. If there is a severe weather warning, we will notify participants of cancellation and organise an alternative date. If showers or extreme heat are predicted, the tour guide may modify the route and the length of the tour.

If I cannot participate in the walking tour can I get a refund?

Museum of Brisbane is only able to grant refunds a minimum of 72 hours before the event. Please refer to the terms and conditions.

Can I eat on the tour?

Eating is not recommended on the walking tour. Light snacks are acceptable. Please bring plastic or metal sealable water bottles, and stay hydrated. Be aware that the walking tour does not allow time to stop to buy food or beverages.

How many people are on each tour?

There are up to 12 places available on each tour. Please note, Museum of Brisbane walking tours require a minimum of four adult and/or concession tickets to be booked to proceed.

How do I book for a group on a walking tour?

Who leads the tours?

A professional Museum of Brisbane Visitor Experience Member leads the walking tours. Our staff have in-depth knowledge of local history and offer wonderful insights about landmarks, art, architecture, and Brisbane’s rich history.

Can I take photos on the tour?

Yes, photos are permitted. If you are taking a photo or filming any of our staff members or your fellow tour participants, we request you seek permission first.

Does the tour go up into the Clock Tower or into City Hall?

No, Clock Tower Tours and City Hall Tours are separate to walking tours. Clock Tower Tours and City Hall Tours are free and can be booked online. Spaces are limited, so we recommend you book early or talk to your tour guide to check availability on the day.
