Museum of Brisbane invites high school students in grades 10-12 to submit an expression of interest to complete a work experience placement who are interested in social history and art. The placement will occur over 3-5 days in the same week.
The student will undertake a Workplace Health and Safety Induction on their first day. This is both mandatory for all people working in the museum but a standard process that the student will experience in their future workplaces. This induction will introduce the student to the various considerations that go into ensuring a safe working environment.
During their work experience, the student will participate in a variety of MoB’s guided tours. These tours will grow their understanding of Brisbane and its history, whilst showcasing one of the roles MoB’s front of house staff perform. The Museum provides tours to a wide range of audiences, from locals to international visitors, schools and other education groups.
During their work experience, the student will shadow a Visitor Experience Officer and participate in various tasks performed by our front of house team. They will engage directly with visitors to ensure a welcoming and informative museum experience. Responsibilities may include greeting visitors, assist with wayfinding, participate in crafts and activations, and collecting feedback through surveys. This hands-on experience will provide an excellent opportunity to develop customer service skills and gain valuable insights into museum operations.
Administrative tasks are an ongoing and important part of many jobs. The student will assist with the maintenance of the MoB Library, scan and print documents, preparation of materials for workshops, etc. Through this process, the student will have an opportunity to take on a small task they are responsible for, honing skills that will be transferable in future jobs.
Students may have an interest in additional areas within the Museum. Below are some examples that can be included in their placement. Please note the opportunity to engage with these areas is not available at all time of the year and is subject to staff availability. Please contact us for more information.
During their work experience, the student will spend time with the Collections Team, learning about their important role in the conservation and management of our growing collection. This behind-the-scenes opportunity will allow the student to gain deeper understanding of how Museums care for the objects and artworks and the specialist knowledge required.
During their work experience, the student will spend time with the Museum’s Research Lead. An integral part of developing exhibitions is completing thorough research. The student will gain an introduction to research processes and the role this plays within the wider curatorial team.
During their work experience, the student will spend time with the Exhibitions Management Team, responsible for overseeing the planning and physical delivery of our exhibitions. The student will gain an understanding of the various roles within the team and what they are responsible for delivering.
