Residency
Jody Rallah, Coolamons in Clay: Collected Ceramics at Museum of Brisbane. Photo: Macami.

Artist in Residence: Jody Rallah

From the Studio to the exhibition walls, watch as Jody’s work comes alive and transforms the Museum with sculpture, painting and performance.

Artist in Residence Jody Rallah challenges the very idea of the ceramic and the Collection, referring instead to clay’s roles on Country, its versatile, transformative character, and its centrality to the life of Aboriginal people of Australia. Rallah, a Yuggera and Biri artist of the Brisbane and North Queensland regions, works with a variety of mediums across object making, sculptural installation, painting and performance.

The residency will be two-fold with Jody in the Studio on various dates between 31 March–9 May planning her installation in the exhibition Clay: Collected Ceramics. The installation will then take place live in the gallery between 13–25 May. Come and see Jody draw using her unfired clay coolamons, ochres and pigments to create an ephemeral artwork on the walls of the Museum.

About Jody Rallah

Jody Rallah is a Yuggera and Biri person of the Brisbane and North Queensland regions. Working with a variety of mediums and practices across object making, sculptural installation painting and performance, Jody investigates how material and place are alive and carry deep knowledge, narratives and teachings. Her work responds to bio-cultural connection to Country and community and to broader conversations about narrative embedded in place. Central to her practice is Jody’s  investigation into how making ignites conversations that span between generations and affect relationships between people and place across time.
