New Light: Community Photographic Display

Photographers of all levels are invited to submit a black and white digital photograph inspired by Brisbane’s built environment. Museum of Brisbane will select a number of submissions to display in our upcoming exhibition, New Light: Photography Now + Then (opening August 2024).

New Light draws on the Elliott Collection, one of the most significant photographic collections housed by Museum of Brisbane. Spanning a 50-year period from 1890 to 1940, the collection was acquired in 1983 after being found stored in cedar cigar boxes under a house in Red Hill. It comprises hundreds of photographs taken by Brisbane amateur photographer, Alfred Henrie Elliott.

In New Light, seven contemporary Brisbane photographers will dive into this treasure trove of an archive and debut exciting new commissions created in response. By layering their own perspectives, knowledge and experiences onto the collection, the artists will encourage new ways of looking at our past, our present and this place.

Alongside these new commissions, New Light will feature a dynamic display that highlights the talents of Brisbane’s broader photographic community.

Get inspired by the Elliott Collection

Alfred Elliott took many photographs of Brisbane’s built environment. We invite you to reflect on this archive (see examples below), and take a black and white photograph that responds to contemporary Brisbane’s urban landscape.

You can use any camera you like.

A number of submissions will be selected by Museum of Brisbane and shown together in a dynamic display as part of New Light.

This project intends to engage the local photographic community with Museum of Brisbane’s historical collections and encourages the community to explore contemporary Brisbane through the lens of photography. This call-out reflects the Museum’s ongoing commitment to providing participatory opportunities for local creative practitioners and the wider community in Brisbane.
