In this immersive three-hour experience, Year 6 students will take part in an interactive workshop, explore local government on a guided City Hall tour, and uncover Brisbane and Queensland’s post-1901 history at the Museum.
Workshop (1 hour)
Students will travel back to 1899 to explore the upcoming referendum, stepping into the roles of everyday Queenslanders of the time. Assigned a unique character, they will experience firsthand the diverse viewpoints of 1899 Queenslanders, debating and voting as their historical counterparts. Through a mini debate and a mock vote, the ‘population’ of Queensland will ultimately decide: Should Queensland federate?
City Hall Tour (1 hour – excursion only)
Brisbane City Hall is the civic seat of the city and is home to the Lord Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Brisbane. This tour of City Hall will ignite discussions on the role of local government and democratic decision making. Students will explore the building’s rich history, including a visit to the Public Gallery of the Council Chambers (except Tuesdays) and other historical rooms throughout the building.
Museum Tour (1 hour – excursion only)
Explore MoB’s current exhibitions, uncovering the stories of Brisbane and the people who continue to contribute to our city’s culture. More than 200 years since Queensland joined a federated Australia, students will be invited to explore how the city has grown over the years.
