Artist in Residence: Sunday Jemmott

Scribble Sanctuary: Where every scribble has a place.

As Museum of Brisbane’s Artist in Residence, emerging artist Sunday Jemmott will transform the Museum entrance into a vibrant Scribble Sanctuary, a playful, welcoming space that celebrates creativity, connection and self-expression.

Exploring drawing as an instinctive human behaviour and a way of making sense of the world around us, Sunday invites visitors to reconnect with the freedom and curiosity of mark-making. Inspired by the childhood urge to draw on walls, the project will activate the Museum entrance through large-scale scribbles, bold colour and joyful interventions.

Visitors will be greeted by a vibrant vinyl installation, and a mixed-media mural will extend Sunday’s distinctive visual language throughout the space. During the residency, Sunday will also collaborate with the community to create an installation of abstract scribble drawings. Together, these works will form the walls of the sanctuary, while suspended textile elements may create a colourful overhead canopy.

At its heart, the residency is about fostering belonging, creativity and connection. Through play and participation, Sunday’s art invites people to come together, slow down, connect with one another and express themselves openly.

During Melt Festival, join Sunday’s drop-in workshops where you can draw alongside the artist and contribute to the Scribble Sanctuary before it opens in 2027. Find out more at Scribble Station with Sunday Jemmott.

About Sunday Jemmott

Sunday Jemmott (they/she) is an emerging artist based in Magandjin/Brisbane. Their work concerns the expression of play through expanded painting.

In her recent work, Sunday mobilises trivialised aesthetics to reframe the devaluing of play in art history and contemporary culture. Their methods include harnessing abstraction, multi-disciplinary painting and sculpture, activated through installation and high-key colour.

Sunday explores play and re-introduces the power of joy to viewers. Their experimental and whimsical work uses the rigour of craft and intense chromatic colour to advocate for play, mediating the intersection between the lowbrow and rigid notions of modern painting.
