Americans in WWII Brisbane Tour

Discover the hidden histories of more than 80,000 American soldiers stationed in Brisbane during the Second World War.

This walking tour will immerse you in a fascinating period of our city’s social history when more than 80,000 American soldiers were stationed in Brisbane during the Second World War. Explore significant historic sites including the headquarters of the Allied Forces in the south-west Pacific, and understand the lasting impact of these events on contemporary Brisbane.

Starting in the opulent foyer of City Hall, uncover the important role the building played during the Second World War, before heading off to uncover locations in our city that reveal compelling stories of wartime experience. Stop at the picturesque Albert Street Uniting Church to learn about Brisbane’s war brides, learn of the tensions between Australian and US troops which caused the infamous ‘Battle of Brisbane’ and complete your tour at the MacArthur Museum, former headquarters of General MacArthur.

How do I make a booking online?

Click the Register button, fill out all mandatory fields in the form and click Submit. Museum of Brisbane concierge will reply within three business days to confirm your tour dates or provide more options.

Americans in WWII Brisbane is a by demand tour and requires two weeks’ minimum notice and a minimum of four adult and/or concession tickets to proceed.

How much does it cost to go on a walking tour?

For Americans in WWII Brisbane the price is $35 for an adult, $30 for concessions and children are $5. Entry into the MacArthur Museum is included. Register via the button below or call (07) 3339 0800 to secure your booking.

How do I know that my booking has been confirmed if I book online?

Once you have registered for a tour, we will be in touch to confirm. After that you will receive a confirmation email with your booking details. Please allow up to three business days for a response.

Are the walking tours wheelchair accessible?

Yes, all the walking tours are wheelchair accessible. Some of the routes can be modified to make them easier and more accessible. If you have a mobility impairment please contact us prior to the day of your tour on (07) 3339 0800, or email bookings@museumofbrisbane.com.au.

Where do we meet on the day of our tour?

Tour begins in King George Square outside entrance to City Hall. Have your booking confirmation on paper or screen ready to show the tour guide.

How long do the tours go for?

The walking tours run for between 90minutes to two hours. The length of the tour is impacted by weather conditions and group size.

What do I need to bring on a walking tour?

Please bring comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen, bottle of water and maybe a light snack. We recommend an umbrella in case of rain.

Can the weather impact walking tours?

Tours will go ahead unless you are informed of a cancellation. If there is a severe weather warning, we will notify participants of cancellation and organise an alternative date. If showers or extreme heat are predicted, the tour guide may modify the route and the length of the tour.

If I cannot participate in the walking tour can I get a refund?

Museum of Brisbane is only able to grant refunds a minimum of 72 hours before the event. Please refer to terms and conditions.

Can I eat on the tour?

Eating is not recommended on the walking tour. Light snacks are acceptable. Please bring plastic or metal sealable water bottles, and stay hydrated. Be aware that the walking tour does not allow time to stop to buy food or beverages.

How many people are on each tour?

There are up to 12 places available on each tour. A minimum of four adult and/or concession tickets is needed to be able to run the tour.

How do I book for a group on a walking tour?

To book a group, please email bookings@museumofbrisbane.com.au. For bookings of over 11 we offer 10 per cent discount.

Who leads the tours?

A professional Museum of Brisbane Visitor Experience Member takes the walking tours. Our staff have in-depth knowledge of local history and offer wonderful insights about landmarks, art, architecture, and Brisbane history.

Can I take photos on the tour?

Yes, photos are permitted. If you are taking a photo or filming any of our staff members, we request you seek permission first.

Does the tour go up into the Clock Tower or into City Hall?

No, Clock Tower Tours and City Hall Tours are separate to walking tours. Clock Tower Tours and City Hall Tours are free and can be booked online. Spaces are limited, so we recommend you book early or talk to your tour guide to check availability on the day.
