The 2019 centenary of the Bauhaus presents an opportunity to consider why the Bauhaus continues to provoke such interest. This forum will explain the Bauhaus legacy, both in Australia and around the world.

The event is an opportunity to celebrate the launch of Bauhaus Diaspora and Beyond: Transforming Education through Art, Design and Architecture ahead of the opening of the Bauhaus Now exhibition at Museum of Brisbane in May 2020. The discussion will reflect on the Bauhaus and other influential modernist movements that were instrumental in shaping art, architecture and design. Join international experts for a lively roundtable discussion asking, “Why study modernism or the Bauhaus today?”

About the speakers

Éva Forgács

Éva Forgács is an Adjunct Professor of Art History in the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. She was professor of Art History at the László Moholy-Nagy University, in her native Budapest, until 1994. Her work is widely published in journals and edited volumes internationally.

 

Philip Goad

Philip Goad is the Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor and Chair of Architecture at the University of Melbourne, where he is also a Co-Director of the Australian Centre for Architectural History, Urban and Cultural Heritage (ACAHUCH). With Ann Stephen, Andrew McNamara, Harriet Edquist and Isabel Wünsche, he is co-editor of Bauhaus Diaspora and Beyond: Transforming Education through Art, Design and Architecture (Miegunyah and Power, 2019).

 

Andrew McNamara

Andrew McNamara teaches Art History at Queensland University of Technology. His most recent publications include: Undesign (Routledge, 2018); Surpassing Modernity: Ambivalence in Art, Politics and Society (Bloomsbury, London, 2018/19); and with Philip Goad, Ann Stephen, Harriet Edquist and Isabel Wünsche, Bauhaus Diaspora and Beyond: Transforming Education through Art, Design and Architecture (Miegunyah and Power, 2019).

 

Isabel Wünsche

Isabel Wünsche is Professor of Art and Art History at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany.  Her research interests are 19th- and 20th-century art, specifically European modernism and the historic avant-garde movements; among her book publications are Biocentrism and Modernism (Ashgate, 2011); Meanings of Abstract Art: Between Nature and Theory (Routledge, 2012); The Organic School of the Russian Avant-Garde: Nature’s Creative Principles (Ashgate, 2015); Practices of Abstract Art: Between Anarchism and Appropriation (Cambridge Scholar, 2016); and The Routledge Companion to Expressionism in a Transnational Context (Routledge, 2018).

On the polished, black granite desk is the sculpture Open Mace, 1972, by Charles O Perry, who had studied under Albers at Yale University. To the right is a Marcel Breuer– designed Model B3 chair, originally designed in 1925–26 when Breuer was head of the cabinet-making workshop at the Dessau Bauhaus and which was later known as the Wassily chair when re-released by Italian manufacturer Gavina Spa. At the end of the desk is an office chair designed by Charles Pollock in 1963 and produced for Knoll.
