Making spaces for the people: Brisbane urbanity and the "Expo effect"

Queensland’s World Expo 88 is considered the catalyst of Brisbane’s change from country town to global city.

The urban redevelopment that occurred after Expo was the city’s real ‘coming of age’. A backdrop to Brisbane’s re-urbanisation were social protests along with political and cultural changes. With Expo and the making of new spaces for the people, a transformed city image emerged.

This forum invites protagonists and city makers to discuss the production of Brisbane’s urban identity during, and after, Expo 88.

This event is presented by The University of Queensland School of Architecture.
