Bouncing Light

When children take part in Bouncing Light they will enter a wonderland filled with glow, shadows and ripples of light.

With curriculum links to the Early Years Framework, and to science and art up to Year 3, this Learn Workshop will allow children to expand their “light vocabulary”, share their discoveries and express their creativity. Using everyday, familiar materials, children can experiment with a different way of making art using an element that in Brisbane we are bathed in: light!

Kinly Grey’s intriguing artwork echoes (2021), featured in Museum of Brisbane’s City in the Sun exhibition, is the inspiration for this illuminating learning experience. Kinly’s work invites us to appreciate our path through a light-filled world in a new way. In this workshop, children will get the chance to meet the artist in person. They will gain an immediate insight into the magic of Kinly’s art making practice. Then, equipped with a personal torch, children can explore light, shadow and reflection for themselves using a variety of familiar materials. Early learners may gain an extended understanding of what “making art” means and what it can look like.

Kinly Grey works with light, smoke, metaphysics and feeling. Their site-specific installations poetically re-imagine ways to understand the world and ourselves within it. Immersive and participatory, Kinly’s works are centered on audience experience and interaction. Combining sciences, mythologies, memory and dreams, Kinly’s works are explorations of feeling and experience that intersect the intimately personal with the cosmically reflective. Kinly is currently working between Meanjin (Brisbane) and Gadigal Land (Sydney).

This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
