The volunteer organisations featured in this exhibition, and many others like them, are without peer.
Because of their selfless service, a blind person can enjoy a book, a home is saved from destruction, and a child can be transported for life-saving treatment. Recently formed organisations build on the foundations laid for them by their predecessors. This is the same selfless spirit that defended our shores from attack in times of war and provided comfort for loved ones far from home.
This exhibition was produced by the Museum of Brisbane, in partnership with the Heritage Unit of Brisbane City Council. It explored the heritage embedded in some notable and some less well-known volunteer organisations. We celebrate their spirit that lives not in bricks and mortar, but in the selfless service, specialist skills and commitment of thousands of individuals over the last 150 years.
