Cabinet of Curiosities

Join Museum of Brisbane and members from Brisbane’s Living Heritage Network for this series of talks and events that will further illuminate the objects and stories contained within Cabinet of Curiosities. Visitors will have the opportunity to dig deeper into different aspects of our city’s history.

MAY

MEDICINAL MYSTERIES                                                        
The medical field has radically changed in the last 100 years.  This event, featuring Jim Nixon, Curator of the Marks Hirschfeld Museum of Medical History at University of Queensland will explore these changes and examine some of the more unusual medical practices of yesterday through the items loaned for Cabinet of Curiosities.

MARKS HIRSCHFELD MUSEUM OF MEDICAL HISTORY                                                                                            
Join Jim Nixon, Curator of the Marks Hirschfeld Museum of Medical History at University of Queensland for a tour of this fascinating medical museum. Visitors can discover one of Australia’s finest collections of medical and surgical instruments, and medical memorabilia.

A QUEEN’S COLONY HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR  
Celebrate Queensland Day with a walking tour exploring our state capital’s past. A Queen’s Colony will visit sites such as Old Government House, the Commissariat Store, Parliament House and the Queensland Club. The tour will conclude at Museum of Brisbane where participants can continue to uncover the past within Cabinet of Curiosities.

FETE DE LA MUSIQUE
Museum of Brisbane will once again play host to some of Brisbane’s finest performers as part of the annual Fete de la Musique celebration. Join us throughout the day as performances take place in Cabinet of Curiosities.

Reveal

TOURS

Tours of Reveal will take visitors through the exhibition and highlight the diversity, cultural significance and value of the City of Brisbane Collection.

A variety of content is discussed on each tour, so there is something for all ages – Brisbane residents and visitors to the city alike.

Every Friday from 12 noon
Last Saturday of every month 1.30pm – 2.30pm

SPECIAL EVENT

CARING FOR THE COLLECTION         

This event will reveal a how Museum of Brisbane cares for one of our city’s greatest cultural assets, the City of Brisbane Collection. Participants will see practical demonstrations of artwork and frame preservation and restoration by a team of experts. The demonstration will conclude with a guided tour of the Reveal exhibition.
