The exhibition’s title PorchSongs, is a reference to the way the paintings are built up from thoughts and memories that stick in the mind like favourite old songs that you might sing quietly on the back porch. They are familiar, but constantly interesting and meaningful.
The acrylic on canvas paintings are built up from many layers, each one partly obscured, but still treasured like an old song.
Daniel Mafe is a local artist whose career is being recognised interstate and internationally.
His preference is to work mainly with abstraction in both painting and digital media.
Mafe is the sixth artist to exhibit in Museum of Brisbane’s New Works by Queensland Artists series of solo exhibitions designed to throw a spotlight on our emerging and contemporary artist.
