Inhabit: Ideas for better living
A FREE program of art installations and events throughout Brisbane's CBD.

Inhabit is a new Brisbane City Council program of public art and events that will transform forgotten and overlooked places throughout Brisbane's CBD. During July and August, laneways, 'pocket parks' and concrete nooks around the city will be re-defined by innovative sculpture, design and events.

Inhabit has been created to promote new ways of thinking about our city. The artists showcased were asked to respond to the theme of 'Ideas of better living'. Urban growth is often linked to the idea of postive progress or 'living better'. But what does such progress mean for city residents? Inhabit explores  this by reinventing the CBD's ' in between' spaces, such as service lanes. These places will become short term venues for a new experience; transforming the everyday into something memorable and unexpected. These installations of art also reflect the ever-changing nature of the city and the way we use it.

See the city of Brisbane in an entirely new way. Download a program guide/map and explore the spaces. Discover Inhabit site by site or make the most of your lunch break and check out something new. Investigate, explore and be amazed - while it lasts.

Digital print on PVC, steel cable fan
Burnett Lane (George Street end)
11 July - 22 August
Hanging high above Burnett Lane, the giant head by Melbourne artist Christopher Langton is a wity nod towards the impact of consumption and techholofy on our perception of what is real. The glossy plastic in this work is also the material of currency in consumer culture. Plastic's malleable nature allows it to be moulded and remoulded - not unlike our ability to remould or change in the hope of being 'better versions' of ouselves. The modern fusion of virtual and real worlds through online networking sites like MySpace and Facebook, and even digital imaging software like Photoshop, all offer this chance to make-believe.

Eagle lane (junction with Queen Street)
11 July - 22 August
Sunshine Coast artist Nicole Voevodin-cash presents a landscape painting that can literally be inhabited. Spilling across Eagle Lane, her Astroturf terrain references the artificial world of painting. Nonetheless, Escapespace offers some 'real time' out in the midst of the hectic urban environment. Sit back, relax - even enjoy a picnic! Sensory experience is at the heart of Voevodin-Cash's practice. 'Painting' a recreational landscape onto a concrete one, she urges a playful interruption of our ordinary engagement with the city.

General Post Office walkway (access off Elizabeth Street)
11 July - 22 August
For more than 18 years, Brisbane design studio Inkahoots has built a practice based around 'Direct Design Action' in social, cultural and political realms. Their installation situates participants within an interactive voting system. Examining a range of provocative topics and ideas, visitors are encouraged to get involved. Presented with the choice between two opposing ideas or words, you can select your preferred option by moving under sensors installed above the GPO walkway. Your 'vote' will then register on the archway as animated projections. Your action will also contribute to an online, ongoing tally that is viewable here.

Learn the Compostism technique by attending one of the free demonstrations by Rodney Glick, or catching it on the back of scooter-led billboards moving through the city.
