These awards are a chance for photographers of any age to showcase their talents and an opportunity to rediscover historical photographs that have captured Brisbane in the past. All entries have a chance to share in prizes and have their work displayed in a major museum exhibition.

The theme for my 2008 Photographic Awards is Growing Up: 150 years of Brisbane.

From the early days of European settlement to today's thriving and vibrant city, Brisbane has come a long way. Our upcoming 150th birthday in 2009 is an opportunity for us to reflect on the diverse and rich history that makes Brisbane the great city it is today.

This year, I invite photos that explore Brisbane's path from then to now. Images that tell the story of life in yesterday or today's Brisbane, from the perspective of Brisbane people - their streets, their suburbs, their city. I want photographers to capture the places, times and events that make Brisbane a great place to live.

Did you guess our last Mystery MoBject?31/10/2009 Mystery MoBject: an ANT CATCHER

The ant catcher was made of porcelain and was used to stop ants climbing into an old fashioned meat safe or ice-box.  Water was placed in the outside of the dish and the leg of the meat safe or ice-box stood in the centre of the dish. The ants could not climb through the water and the food inside stayed insect-free.

Artwork for Gootcha - the 16th CityCat 20/08/2010 In addition to projects such as PLATFORM, from time to time the Museum of Brisbane works with Brisbane City Council to commission contemporary artworks for the public realm. Recent projects include: Artwork for Gootcha, the 16th CityCat ferry, by Judy Watson.

Judy Watson’s shoal (1998) forms a net that wraps Gootcha, the 16th CityCat ferry. This work relates to passages of water, the pulsating heart of the city, and what is caught within the net: eel, Brisbane River cod, crab, turtle, mullet, guard fish, shellfish. The lines, like the scales of a fish, or the reflection of light, also mirror the water as the currents sweep along the river.

Commissioned by Brisbane City Council.

The William Jolly Bridge creative lighting project27/08/2010 In addition to projects such as PLATFORM, from time to time the Museum of Brisbane works with Brisbane City Council to commission contemporary artworks for the public realm. Recent projects include: The William Jolly Bridge creative lighting project.

Artist Ian de Gruchy was commissioned to create the inaugural projections as part of Queensland and Brisbane's 150th birthday celebrations, September 2009. Associated with the local area, Brisbane's history and the bridge itself, images included: Signatures and Petitions (1859), comprised of signatures from the petitions that were the basis for separation from NSW and Brisbane’s declaration as a municipality; Brisbane's Flag; Red Poinsettia; Meccano, conveying the bridge’s construction. De Gruchy also developed an image in consultation with and on behalf of Brisbane artist Lilla Watson, derived from Soft Night Falling (2005).

In 2010, as part of the Inhabit program: Laith McGregor and Guan Wei; And as part of Youth Week: Rose Feely, Hannah Groff, Fiona Mail and Erika Scott were invited to develop and project images to be added to the ongoing projection library.
